Fiance(e) K-1 Visa Medical exam
All applicants are required to have this Fiance(e) K-1 Visa Medical exam before the Interview. It’s an assessment of your fiance(e)’s basic health.
.
In the exam, your fiance(e) is checked for
-
- 1. Physical health
-
- 2. Mental health
-
- 3. Blood works (communicable diseases)
-
- 4. Vaccinations.
.
The results of the exam and information are passed to the US Embassy for review. In some cases, the physician forwards the results by themselves. In other cases, the applicant brings the results by hand to the fiance visa interview.
The Medical Exam happens near the end of the entire fiance(e) visa process. Once you schedule a date for your K-1 Fiance(e) Visa interview, you’ll be instructed to schedule the Medical Exam. You’ll set up the appointment yourself with an approved physician.
It’s best to have the Medical exam before the visa interview. If not, you’ll have to wait until the Embassy receives the medical report before they make a decision. To speed up the process, make sure to book it in advance. In fact, consider it a requirement.
.

What to bring to the Medical exam
You’ll read instructions in the interview packets indicating what you need to bring to the exam. It’s typically the same for MOST of the physicians. Normally, this is what you bring…
-
- 1. Vaccination records
-
- 2. records of any previous medical history (include surgeries, medications, possible hospitalizations, etc.)
-
- 3. Passport as ID proof (or other acceptable forms)
-
- 4. Visa interview confirmation letter
-
- 5. Payment for Medical Exam
-
- 6. There may be several more requirements listed in the packets.
- .
Before the exam, you may also be asked to fill out the questionnaire, make sure that you take that with you at the exam.
.
What to expect at the Medical exam
There are three parts to the exam. They’re normally done the same day:
.
-
- 1. Chest x-ray
-
- 2. Physical examination & blood test & Vaccinations
-
- 3. Questionnaire
.
In some cases where they’re problems, you may be asked to come in again.
.
Questions asked at the Fiance Visa Medical Exam
The questions are basically going to be the same ones you already answered on the questionnaire. The point of this exam is for the embassy to have an insight if you had some infectious diseases before, and is there a chance that you might take any infectious diseases in the U.S. One of the major ones is Tuberculosis.
The doctors will also ask you if you have ever taken any recreational drugs, in order to find out more about your character, and if you are likely to be involved in any criminal activity once you are in the States.
.
Do children need to take the Medical Exam?
The requirement for children taking a medical exam is up to the US Embassy. According to the US Dept of State, children under 15 applying for the K2 visa, normally won’t need to take the chest x-ray or blood works. Unless there is a reason they should.
.
If you have a medical condition
Having an existing medical condition is not an automatic fiance k-1 visa denial. Certain diseases are not of a concern while others may require treatment before proceeding. For full information visit the US Department of State’s page on The Medical Exam or consult the approved physician.
The law on the medical exam clearly says medical conditions of concern are “Class A” that pose a “treat to to the property, safety, or welfare of the alien or others” or communicable diseases that are “of public health significance”.
Do you have a particular medical conditions that you’re worried about? will it cause a denial? see my medical exam tutorial to find answers and possible solutions>>
As long as the condition doesn’t threaten your fiance(e) or others, or progressively get worse, then the condition is usually not a concern.

Fiance(e) K1 visa medical exam Tips
These tips can help give you peace of mind if you’re worried about the medical exam
.
- 1. The US Embassy consular makes the ultimate decision
To grant/deny a visa based on the medical report. Not the physician. Although, the physician may be consulted. If there is something that concerns “public health”, the consular may raise an objection.
.
. - 2. Reasons for concern
Communicable diseases, STDs, mental or physical conditions that prevent normal functioning, drug addiction, or any diseases that get progressively worse...
- 3. Get treatment
If your fiance(e) has some medical condition, he/she can get treated for it. If the consular or physician see that the disease is treatable, then they may approve the case..
.
- 4. Bring past medical records
Your fiance(e) should provide evidence of past or on-going treatment for any disease. This helps to convince the physician of active treatment and control that they may be concerned about.

How to prepare for the Fiance(e) K1 visa medical exam
Typically preparations for the K-1 visa medical exam include scheduling the exam. Then you ought to gather up all your documents (from the list). See the full tutorial on preparing the medical exam for the k-1 interview.
Especially if you’ve had a previous medical condition that you’re worried about, for example:
.
- Tuberculosis
- STD
- Drug addictions
- Psychotic issues
.
Then it’s not an automatic denial. Depending on prior history, treatments and your cooperation with the physician, you may be able to get an approval (or a waiver).

Do you have to repay for your medical while you’re waiting on your Visa interview with this coronavirus if you’re just waiting on your interview and your medical is done already
Mike,
The medical exam is good for 6 months for the K visa interview. If you had the medical exam already and it’s past 6 months to your K visa interview, you will have to repeat and repay for the exam.

Hi! Can we go to a different physician after starting with one? They seem to only be delaying the process to get more money from us since we have to pay every time my finde goes to the clinic. Thanks!
Hello Lil,
There are only a few handful of allowable physicians you can get the report completed from. You must check your K visa instruction sheet for those names. If you prefer to use another approved physician on the list, you can call them up to make an appointment and do your exam.
