Fiance(e) K1 Visa Proof of relationship
A bona fide relationship is required for successful approval of the Fiance(e) K1 visa.
What is a “bona fide relationship”? Why is it required?
During the Fiance(e) visa interview, you are required to present evidence to prove that you and your fiance(e) have a bona fide relationship. In other words, you will convince the consular that you two have a real and genuine relationship.
You show how your lives are intertwined. And, that you have the utmost intention to marry each other due to love (NOT for immigration benefits). Your evidence should focus on these things.
The purpose behind this is for the Immigration authorities to validate your true relationship, your honest intention to marry each other (due to love), and ensure you’re not misusing the Immigration system for a Green Card.
.
What’s required as proof? how much do you bring?
By law, the proof that you bring only needs to cover the time period since you filed the I-129F up until the K1 interview. But, it’s advisable that you go beyond this minimum.
Your interview will be at a US Embassy. Most are not specific on what they require as proof, but they provide a hint on what’s commonly used: photographs, passport stamps, correspondence, etc.
So, much is left up to you to gather a variety of convincing bona fide evidence in your favor. Then you present it in a very clear and effective way. How do you do that? And, how much of each?
Ask yourself, “How did my fiance(e) and I keep in touch since filing? and, what undoubtedly shows that we care about each other?” Think about documented evidence you have.

Hello Prem,
Thank you for your helpful inputs. Regarding our family issue, we included those details in our love story. My fiance is also planning to visit my family and I before the interview (granted we don’t get an RFE) to take more pictures and provide additional proofs, since my side of the family is okay with our relationship. Do you think doing this will compensate for the US Embassy interview? Also, is there any way you can review our packet for a set deal before we ship to USCIS? Any help will be greatly appreciated.
Asim,
To me, these are good efforts to get more evidence. Hopefully the extra visit and more photos will be enough for your interview.
In regards to the review packet, you can email me and we’ll discuss.

Thanks for the reply Prem. We are going to include the airplane tickets, bus tickets and a couple of pictures that we have together…as well some screenshots of our daily chats and facetime…regarding interview questions i am going to be completely honest with embassy since our case is far from traditional and it is practically impossible for us to get married traditionally with involvement anyway. Shall we just go ahead and include our family issue in our k1 packet? Your advise would be really helpful for us..
Hello Asim,
My philosophy on red flags is to try to expose the red flag and show that you’re working to resolve it rather than hide red flags and hope that no one notices. You should figure out what you’d like to do in regards to the family involvement issue. You can talk about it in your letters/statement and show that you tried to resolve/fix the red flag. Besides that, you should include all good evidence that you have in regards to your in-person meeting.

hi Prem,
Me and my fiance have been planning to send out our k1 packet next week. However, we have a small family problem as our family is non-supportive and due to that we have no family pictures and no formal ceremony pictures. We both met online first and met each other in real life on our vacations when my fiance visited india on family vacations. we have prepared our k1 packet and honestly your blog has been really helpful and we thank you for that! Do you think our packet will be rejected just because in all our pictures its just two of us? Really looking forward for your reply.
Hello Asim,
The USCIS doesn’t factor family involvement into your approval procedure. They’re more concerned with your eligibility. You know… being free to marry, petitioner being a US citizen, and so on.
The US Embassy is more concerned about proof of relationship and that’s where you may face resistance. India is traditionally heavy with family involvement, so it’s likely that the Officers will ask why your parents or her parents aren’t involved in the relationship.
The best answer is the truth. Just reply what the circumstances are. It’s up to you to convince the officer that you two have a legitimate relationship. How do you plan to do this, Asim? What kind of evidence do you intend to place within your application?

Hi
I’m from Iran and my fiance is from the United States. We want to go for a K1 visa. My country religion is Islam, but I’m a Cristian, I want to know if my baptismal certificate is needed for I 129F petition. As Iran is in the restriction list(red flag), does it affect on our petition?
Thanks a lot
Hey Meli,
Even with the travel ban and heightened scrutiny, all family- and marriage-based petitions are still being processed and approved. That means k-1 visas should theoretically not be affected by anything.
Your religion has nothing to do with eligibility. Regardless of if you’re a Christian or Muslim. You don’t need to submit you baptismal records UNLESS it’s for a particular reason. For example, if you don’t have a birth certificate, and you want to use the baptismal record as secondary evidence of birth. Otherwise, don’t complicate the matter with unnecessary documents.
You mentioned in the survey that you’re worried about being a previous refugee? Unless you entered illegally, were deported, banned or committed a crime while you were here, you don’t have much to worry about. Does that answer your question?
